Ben Gratton, 18, is from a dairy, beef and sheep farm outside of Buxton in Derbyshire. He is currently working on a dairy and arable farm in Shropshire as part of his level 3 advanced technical extended diploma in agriculture at Reaseheath College.
Background:Having grown up on the family farm near Buxton I have always been passionate about agriculture.
I startedmy first job at the age of 13, as a relief miler for a local farmer, as well as working at home.
During school, I always had my mind set on going to college and studying agriculture so that I could expand my knowledge in sectors that I had experienced, but more so in those that I had not, such as arable farming.
This is why I wanted to spent my middle year placement at a farm which grew crops.
I also wanted to experience dairy farming on a larger scale, hence why I chose the farm I did.
Young Farmers Club: Before the Covid-19 pandemic, I was an active member of Buxton YFC, joining in 2016.
I attended many meetings and took part in sports, public speaking, stock judging and other competitions.
However, I am now a member of Whitchurch YFC since I am living at my placement farm near Market Drayton.
It was a big step moving to Shropshire in August 2021 and an even bigger one joining a new YFC.
I am glad I pushed myself to do so because I do not think I would have met half the people I have.
I have been involved in float building, ice-skating and farm tours and become part of their tug of war team.
I strongly recommend getting involved in your local YFC as it does create a lot of connections.
Future: Once I finish my course at Reaseheath, I intend to go back home and work on the family farm.
Something I would take great pleasure in, once I am home, is being able show some of our animals, such as our Pedigree Holsteins,British Bluesand Limousins.
